Cooling Capacity

The measure of an air conditioner’s ability to remove heat in a given size of room. The higher the cooling capacity is the bigger the room size the air conditioner can cool. The usual unit of measurement are kilojoules per hour (kJ/hr) or British Termal Units (BTU).

 

Power Consumption

Refers to the electrical energy per unit time supplied to operate something, such as an air conditioner. Power consumption is usually measured in units of watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). So an air conditioner with a power consumption of 500 watts or 0.5kilowatts mean that appliance consume approximately 500 watts or 0.5 kilowatts of electricity per hour of use.

 

EER

This is the ratio of cooling capacity to the power input, or how well it cools compared to how much energy it needs. Cooling Capacity (kJ/Hr or BTU) divided over Power input (KWH). The higher the EER is the more efficient an air conditioner in cooling at an optimal power level.

 

SEER

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The difference between EER and SEER is the “S”, which stands for seasonal. Rather than measuring the energy efficiency of an air conditioner at one operating temperature, SEER is the calculation of how energy efficient the air conditioner is during the cooling season at varying temperatures. Said another way, SEER takes into account how the EER is affected by different temperatures.

 

  • EER is the efficiency you can expect from the air conditioner at peak cooling time (in the midst of the summer) because it is measured at only one, higher temperature.
  • SEER is an average. It takes into account the highs and lows of a typical home’s cooling pattern.

 

Recommended Cooling Space

All cooling capacity has the corresponding space to achieve the optimal cooling effect. Using an unit that is too small (low cooling capacity) will be too underpowered to cool your room, and you will never reach the ideal temperatures for your room. On the other hand, picking an oversized unit (higher cooling capacity) will cool the room quickly, but will inefficiently cycle on and off which will lead to higher power consumption and higher electricity cost. It is important to properly survey the room on the correct air conditioner size to used, other factors also come into play like are there any heat load in the room (stove, TV’s, lamps) and how many people are staying in the room which will all ultimately lead to a higher cooling requirement. Always consult an authorized installer to survey the room before purchasing an air conditioner.
